Electric Eel: The Animal That Generates Electricity

Liam James Log by: Liam James
The electric eel is one of nature’s most astonishing creatures, capable of generating powerful electric shocks to hunt, navigate, and defend itself. Despite its name, the electric eel is not a true eel but a type of knifefish native to South America’s murky rivers. What makes the electric eel extraordinary is its ability to produce electric discharges of up to 600 volts—strong enough to stun prey, deter predators, and even pose a danger to humans. This electricity is generated by specialized cells called electrocytes, which function like biological batteries stacked in series. Electric eels use low-voltage pulses to sense their surroundings, similar to radar, allowing them to detect objects and prey in dark or muddy water. When attacking, they release high-voltage bursts that can temporarily paralyze muscles, making escape nearly impossible. Recent studies have also shown that electric eels can leap out of the water to deliver shocks directly to threats, increasing the effectiveness of their attack. This combination of biological electricity, precision control, and adaptive behavior makes the electric eel one of the most extraordinary animals on Earth.
